Volunteer
at the Center:
Who we are: We are an interfaith
intentional community, in the tradition of the Catholic worker
movement, Dorothy Day and Gandhi. Today, we need a movement for the
new population of the working poor, which is now a majority of those
in poverty. Instead of just soup kitchens that make people wait in
line at noon, we believe in programs that can bring a bag of groceries
to a hotel maid at 4:30pm, when she gets back from work, before she
cooks supper for her kids. Beyond efforts to expand welfare at the
federal government, we need to embrace a living wage movement that
lifts all workers above the poverty line. Living wage campaigns and
movement is building a growing community of volunteers guided by
non-violent philosophy, living in voluntary poverty, constructively
serving and empowering the poorest workers that are struggling to
reach a living wage.
What we do: Housing the working poor -
Cesar Chavez House of Hospitality - We provide emergency housing for
individuals that live and work below the poverty line in addition to
volunteers that agree to live in voluntary poverty. In addition, we
provide sanctuary for whistle blowers within these poverty industries
that expose the horrible conditions in the workplace and are venerable
to being fired, harassed and threatened. Feed the Working Poor - Food
Distribution programs to provide food assistance for the working poor
that are having a difficult month. Cloth the Working Poor - Clothing
Distribution program - collect and distribute clothing to assure that
the community of the working poor have basic clothing needs met.
Advocate for the Working Poor - "Resistance work" - focus on
living wage and other programs that will lift the poor above the
poverty line. We will adopt efforts to systematically improve the
conditions of the working poor in the community. Educate the community
about the Working Poor - a faith based newspaper, website and
list-serve about the poor, and issues of poverty in America. We
publish a newspaper that seeks to awaken America to its invisible
population of those that work hard and still live below the poverty
line, while testifying to our experience of living with and serving
those in poverty. Educate the Poor - outreach to those in need of
services and teach them how to access them.
